Artificial is a unique story, both visually and in terms of its content. Full of vibrant colour, and engaging world-building, this indie comic is an extremely promising start to what looks to be an incredible series.

The story focuses on Vincent van Gogh, and while the first half introduces readers to a man who is universally recognisable, the second half sees him step into an entirely different world full of robots, blood-red skies and a whole lot of intrigue.

Vincent is then joined by other historical figures who appear to be displaced from their own times, Mary Cassatt and Leonardo da Vinci. As the first, and currently only entry, Artificial ends on a cliffhanger that leaves readers with more questions than answers.

Chris O’Hara does a wonderful job of pulling readers into the story with attention to detail that creates a level of authenticity that elevates the story and brings the characters to life. Artificial is O’Hara’s debut entry into the indie comic scene but the story has not suffered due to lack of experience. There is strong intention behind the dialogue, creating a strong emotional connection to Vincent and clearly conveying his loneliness.

Likewise, Gabriel Fonseca is new to the world of comic book making, however, his art is outstanding! The visuals are unique and full of character with each panel effortlessly pushing the story forward. Vincent’s unique view of the world is clearly displayed alongside more traditional panels creating a beautiful juxtaposition and separation between his reality and the rest of the world.

Audiences are also treated with several stunning full page scenes which force readers to pause and reflect on the outstanding style. Fonseca has a clear natural talent for storytelling through art and panels.

Overall, the story and art combine to create something spectacular. It’s a shame that only the first issue is available now as the story promises to be a captivating one. I would highly recommend fans of indie comics, historical fiction, and sci-fi to pick up a copy, you won’t be disappointed.

You can find the Kickstarter for Artificial here, and to hear more about the man behind the story, Chris O’Hara, I interviewed him on my podcast which you can listen to below:
